Been away for a while, I know, but I need to make a few plugs.
First, I've switched to NewsGator for my News Aggregator; had to be done, as Radio's aggregator was unweildly if I didn't check my news every hour or so, and the application bounced the CPUs up to 100% a few times an hour if I left it running. Also, I never liked being unable to view my feeds in anything other than chronological order, especially if I did not check them regularly. NewsGator is great so far; I've categorized and moved things around. One tip, for anyone thinking of starting it...if you don't think you'll want each feed in its own folder (I certainly did not, with over 150 subscriptions) create a default folder first, and then move things around once you've imported your subscriptions. For me, new subscriptions automatically go into my _New folder, rather than creating their own folders, which keeps things organized.
Also, play around with the views you can create; I consider myself an Outlook geek, so I created a few views for myself in Outlook 2003 (notes on the Office 2003 launch event coming later this week) that are particularly useful. I'm still working on creating a feed-based view (rather than using the From field) for folders that aggregate posts from multiple feeds. The "from" field works great for single-author blogs, but for group blogs or group feeds like Hit & Run (feed), or the NYTimes (feed) the "From" field separates each author's items into their own groups. (As a side note, I love seeing the "from" information for the group blogs; that was a pet peeve of mine when I was using a linear aggregator; I'd see just the feed information, but have no idea who had written an actual post without visiting the site. So it goes both ways.) If I come up with a way to group by feed (without using separate folders, which is the obvious solution), I'll post it here.
One more note--my department is testing Outlook 2003 now, and as part of that, we are creating Sharepoint sites and an internal blog. We purchased NewsGator licenses for my immediate department, as well, because I have been going on and on about news aggregators and everyone else wanted to give it a try as well. I exported some subscriptions I thought they'd like, as well, as a starter pack.
Second, I want to plug a new site I found through my Slipstick feed. The MS Exchange Blog (feed) is chock full of useful client- and server-related information; I cannot believe I have not seen it before. I'm very excited to have found it; in the last hour, I have used data from two posts in my own organization. Plus, it has a great blogroll of useful links. Very very cool.
