Human rights activists seeking a reprieve for a woman sentenced to death by stoning in Nigeria intensified international pressure Friday by delivering a petition signed by more than 1 million people to the Nigerian High Commission. (09/28/02)

Nigeria officially has a secular constitution and court system, but it is notoriously slow and cumbersome.  This woman was convicted in a court that applies sharia law, which has been adopted by some northern provinces of Nigeria.  [See this article in The Economist.  See also this article from the Human Rights Watch.]
